Buyer, beware!

A colleague recently sent around some photos of the Skydeck at the Willis Tower (formerly the Sears Tower) in Chicago. If you saw these photos too, you probably recall seeing the glass-bottomed ledge. If you’d like an unobstructed view of Chicago from 1,353 feet up, this is for you.

 The photos came with a short narrative that said that adults tend to be a lot more cautious than children about stepping onto the ledge. Why would that be? Trying to imagine the mindset of a 10-year-old, I suspect that a child’s perspective is akin to “They wouldn’t have built it if it weren’t safe.”

Toyota's failure to communicate-a lesson for us all

Cousin Roy called last night. We chatted about family, weather, and work — the usual topics of conversation. Roy's two brothers died last year, a few months apart — very sad news. Roy works for a Toyota dealership in Kentucky. More sad news. Or maybe not. Roy said that he's sold 25 cars this month, and he thinks people will be surprised when Toyota's March sales numbers are released. (more...)

Jobs don't matter to the dead

Two of the most compelling stories these days have to do with an athlete long-considered the best golfer in the world and an automaker that became the world’s No. 1 in 2008 (and is ranked Japan's No. 1 global brand for 2010): Tiger Woods and Toyota.

Once at the top of their games, both entities (brands) now are teetering on the brink of graveyard death. Barring miraculous overnight one-eighties, they're destined to remain there for a long time. The question is how long -- if ever -- it will take them to regain solid footing and escape burial in graves they dug for themselves. (more...)
