New Year, less money

January 9th, 2013

It’s a New Year, and we escaped falling off the fiscal cliff, thanks to the very last-minute, drama-laden efforts of Congress to pass a bill to avert a much-portended catastrophe. In fact, if you went to bed too early on New Year’s Eve, which I apparently did, you fell asleep thinking we were going over the edge. It wasn’t until the next morning when I fired up my computer that I learned about the bill passing the Senate and awaiting House approval.

The bill covers a lot of ground, and yesterday’s “Fabricating Update” e-newsletter attempted to cover a few highlights that affect fabricators, both personally and from a business standpoint. And then, as we always do, we asked readers to share their thoughts about the topic. (more...)

Fabricators on rebuilding manufacturing's infrastructure

April 18th, 2012

It all started with a blog post by The FABRICATOR®'s Senior Editor Tim Heston: The moral imperative of U.S. manufacturing. The post discussed the manufacturing supply chain and how the U.S. must rebuild its infrastructure to compete in the global marketplace. It led to posts by Editor-in-Chief Dan Davis and TPJ-The Tube & Pipe Journal®'s Editor Eric Lundin, who also had something to say about the topic, and it became the focus of the April "Fabricating Update" e-newsletter.

The newsletter quoted some of Heston's remarks, including: "I'd say it's a moral imperative that we again build our U.S. manufacturing infrastructure so we can respond to companies like Apple, with skilled workers and automaton. (As New York Times Reporter David Barboza reported on NPR), in the 1990s a California factory, full of automation, used to produce Apple computers. Surely, such flexible automation could be employed again. Apple has amazing market dominance and eye-popping production volumes. When you combine those two factors, some incredible manufacturing technology innovations may occur. (OK, the global market may not work like that, but the idealist in me sometimes wishes it did.)"

We asked "Fabricating Update" readers whether it is idealistic to think the U.S. can again build its manufacturing infrastructure to respond to companies like Apple. Here's what they had to say: (more...)

If you're thinking about opening a business and are weighing possible locations, you may want to wait until after Nov. 2 and see if voters in Polk County, Florida, pass a referendum that will give new and expanding businesses a break from property taxes for up to 10 years. (more...)

Loaded with land mines

April 15th, 2010

It’s April 15 — one of the most recognizable, and often dreaded, days in the U.S. Probably as recognizable as July 4, but more akin to December 7  for many. It's the deadline for filing federal income tax returns.

According to a recent unscientific poll on thefabricator.com, 47 percent of poll takers expect to write Uncle Sam a check today, 41 percent expect a refund, and 12 percent aren’t filing. This year more of the 88 percent who are filing are preparing their own returns using programs like TurboTax, and fewer are turning to firms like H&R Block and Jackson Hewitt. I read about this trend in yesterday's USA Today, and since I've been completing my own returns for a decade — after finding costly mistakes in a $400-plus CPA-prepared return — the news didn't surprise me.
