Flames of misfortune

I had a meeting in the near northwest suburbs of Chicago earlier this week. To get there, I literally had to go over the hills—that"s the suburb of Lake in the Hills to be exact—and through the woods—also known as the Cook County Forest Preserve.

Of course, that was a 25-minute detour because my original route was cut off by a major fire. I had intended on taking Illinois Highway 14 to my destination, but the highway was closed off in both directions, preventing any access to the bridge that crosses the not-so-mighty Fox River. Emergency officials aren"t in chatty moods during these types of crises, so I was left to my own deductive skills.

What construction slowdown?

Manufacturing continues to plug along, not expanding, but not exactly in a slump either. The Institute for Supply Management"s index, the PMI, released this week, grew slightly, from 48.6 in April to 49.6 in Maystill not in growth mode, but it"s more than most had predicted.

The view from the airplane window shows an economy as a series of dichotomies: on the one hand this, on the other hand that. There"s weakness in the auto and residential construction sectors, but on the other hand there"s growth in export-related manufacturing, including machine-building, and there"s continued growth in the commercial building sector for hospitals and hotels.

That"s the view at 30,000 feet. However, many have quite different views at ground level. Just ask the city dwellers on Manhattan Island.

Safety first

Two co-workers and I are heading off for some welding training next week, which will allow us to beef up our welding knowledge and generally embarrass ourselves in front of skilled professionals. So as I was having an e-mail conversation earlier this week with Gerald Davis, the author of The FABRICATOR"s Precision Matters column, I let him know of the plans for next week. In his reply, he shared a tale involving his early foray into GMAW.
