A Ross way of thinking

What a troubled week. Automotive industry execs spent it in front of Congress saying they need a loan. And of course there are those big weekend stories, with Lehman Brothers declaring bankruptcy and Bank of America acquiring brokerage giant Merrill Lynch.

Hearing and reading all the pundits pine over the troubled economy, one voice struck a chord with me.

I"d rather have a mediocre idea that was brilliantly executed than a brilliant idea that was poorly executed.

Weathering the storm on Cape Ann

The economy is looking like an intricate patchwork that"s still holding together, though with some seriously thread-bare areas. The housing and financial service sectors make up the brunt of those bare threads, while manufacturing continues to hold surprisingly strong, if you don"t include sectors like automotive and construction. Surprising everyone, factory orders increased 1.3 percent in July, much of it in support of the growing energy and agriculture sectors.

And though it"s really just a technicality, some are predicting the U.S. may not fall into an official recession, that is, two consecutive quarters of negative growth.

Of course, Bernard Savo probably doesn"t care about technicalities.

Hey, buddy, can you spare a pole?

Editor's Note: I'm running late with my blog because I've been out of town. Here's a quick plea from STAMPING Journal Editor Kate Bachman that should tide you over. C'mon, let's make those phones ring. DDD.

On the same day, I received a plea from the coach of a youth football team desperately trying to piece together the equipment needed to outfit three youth teams and a press release regarding the booming private-jet industry.

I am a head coach of a Virginia National Youth Football program, the Warrenton Wolfpack. We started this program in our rural area three years ago in order to provide an outlet for children in our community who have exceptional
athletic talent but no competitive program.
